Information on processing dependent peak counts at the same Ra-values using EDT-electrodes of the Udo Plante GmbH.

Electrode types:

  • 2CE2150 Copper hollow profile,
  • 1GE0100 Plangraph 1 (Graphite full material)
  • 2GE0100 Plangraph 2 (Graphite 65%/Copper 35% full material).

A significantly higher number of peaks was reached at Plangraph 1 in the Cap (-) modus at a roughness Ra of 3.02μ with 104/cm. With the hollow copper electrodes there was determined a peak count of only 63/cm at mode Cap (-) and almost the same roughness of 3.06μ Ra. Also with hollow copper electrodes at mode Puls (+) with almost the same roughness of 3,06µ Ra, there was a peak count of 76/cm. Further, the Plangraph 2 electrodes (graphite 65%/35% copper) showed a slight increase in the number of peaks of 120/cm.

Summary:

To what extent this slight increase from 104 to 120 points (increase of about 15%) justifies a much higher price (about 3-times) remains to be discussed. The cost of producing these graphite types is enormous. The graphite block in liquid state is under vacuum immersed into glowing copper (melting point 1.083°C). Thereafter, the liquid copper diffuses under protective gas and pressure in the remaining open pores between the graphite portions. After finishing the diffusion process, the copper-graphite block will be lifted out of the copper bath. After cooling process and appropriate quality control the block is ready for mechanical processing of countless electrodes dimensions.
